Legend: Clara Schumann

Legend: Clara Schumann

September 13, 1819 – May 20, 1896

Breaking the prohibitions

Clara is widely known as the wife of the composer Schumann and the first love of the composer Brahms. But actually… This woman’s life is a phenomenon in the world of music and something more than a unit in a complicated love triangle. What was she like? A child prodigy? Yes. A woman’s unique dedication and hard work? Without a doubt.

Music. Clara Josephine Wick’s father was one of the best music teachers in Germany, owned a company selling musical instruments, as well as a library of musical literature. After his divorce from his wife, he was left with a five-year-old daughter and four sons. Her daughter showed outstanding musical abilities, and her father devoted all his efforts to their development. She has mastered the violin and solfeggio, the basics of composition, and piano playing. At nine, Clara played at the Leipzig Concert Hall and made a splash. Her father was her teacher and "producer." She toured Germany, France, Austria. She performed her compositions by Bach, Scarlatti, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann.

Love. When Robert Schuman first heard 11-year-old Clara play, he was eager to learn from her father. He moved in with the Vicks, and Clara fell in love with a law student. But he "noticed" her only when she reached her 17th birthday. The father was against his daughter’s marriage to an unknown young man. Vic broke up with a student and accused him of alcoholism and unstable mentality. But Schumann and Clara obtained a marriage license through the court (marriage was impossible for a minor without her father’s consent) and on September 12, 1840, they got married. Years later, when Robert gained recognition as a composer, Clara’s father offered peace. In their marriage, they were both insanely happy and unhappy from insanity. Clara performed as a pianist, taught, composed, earned more than her husband, but at the same time gave birth to children and surrounded Robert with care so that he wrote. And he literally showered her with works dedicated to her. But still, he turned out to have an unstable psyche, and bouts of illness haunted him. In 1854, he was sent to a hospital, he rapidly lost his mind and died in 1856, leaving a 37-year-old widow with eight children.

Independence. Klara stopped performing for a while, but continued to compose and teach. And she dealt with her husband’s legacy: edited, performed, published. Since 1878, Clara has been a piano teacher at the Frankfurt Conservatory, and continues to perform. The last time she performed in public was at the age of 71 (!).

Details of one of the first in the world

Clara played the performances from memory. The 100 DM bill (abolished after the introduction of the euro) featured Clara Schumann. Brahms worshipped Schumann’s music, and lived at Robert’s invitation in their house. He fell in love with Clara (he is 20, she is 34, Schuman is 43). During Robert’s illness, Brahms supported Clara, but when she became a widow, he did not propose to her. The reasons are a mystery. https://escortparis24.com/vip/
